Following an appeal by the West Yorkshire League that the Spartan South Midlands League played a player that had formerly been a contract player

 

The appeal was heard by the Football Association and was upheld - therefore the Spartan South Midlands League side have been removed from the competition.

Can you advise who and which rule this broke?

The competition is strictly for amateur players who have never been under a written professional contract.

One of the officials from the West Yorkshire league told me they fell foul of this rule themselves in a previous year when a player had forgotten that he had briefly been under contract as a teenager and they were removed after winning a semi final.

Believe the player was Nathan Graham.

What a stupid rule. Surely if he is not under contract this season he is a non contract player. So if a player 10 years ago was on a contract but for the last 9 he was not who is going to know this!

Would someone from the league be prepared to explain why the decision is not being appealed? Seems very spineless to accept and lie down to something like this. More than happy to take the credit for progressing through each stage yet nowhere to be seen when there's a 'fight' to be won.

The issue was a contract with Aylesbury United in 2007.

Possibly because they've now realised that they did break the rule?

There is only one way to appeal this and that is if you can prove any payment during contract was only expenses.

 

If not an appeal would fail.

But where is the evidence to prove this WAS the case. Surely it should be proved he was paid under contract just the same!?

Might me wrong but don't all contracts have be submitted with the FA?

Surely Aston Goss. I seem to remember Aylesbury putting him, and a few other talented youngsters on contract amid interest from Oxford, Swindon, Luton back in the day. Funny rule though. They're Amateurs now and that's the level of the competition, it should stop there.

Might be a 'poor' rule, but it is a Competition Rule. Just like fines for not having Club AR's the thing to attempt to do is change the rule - not ignore it!!

Good luck changing that rule, it is set by UEFA under their Regions Cup rules, which is then based on a FIFA rule defining a professional player.

 

That being said it is embarrassing the league didn't check player eligibility.

Personally I think it's a joke, how can the league not check these things in the first place, the team have done an amazing job getting to that final and now they are punished by missing out on a great cup final day,
