There used to be a Southgate team in the Spartan League - Southgate Olympic I think - also in the borough. I remember watching BRFC play there. It was really M Mouse - they had a sort of portable stadium. They played in a normal park and had to bring out a rope fixed to road irons for the pitch surround, and funky litle plywood dugouts for the managers/subs - like the wooden horse POW thing.

There also used to be an Edmonton FC - since amalgamated and now part of Haringey Borough I believe.

The Invisible Dad was at RAF Hornchurch during the early years of WW2........(yes he was on our side).

Southgate Olympic played at Broomfield Park and that was another football pitch removed by the tyrants at the council. I do not believe they are a senior club as they play in the Amateur Alliance against old boys clubs and bank sides etc. They also play in the Arthur Dunn Cup which was regularly reported on in the Sunday/Daily telegraph.

I have just been to their web site ( http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/olympic/index.jhtml ) and it is good to see that they are still going. They play and have a club house at Firs Lane. I have had many a pint with the Stockmans, who used, occasionally, to be found at Enfield Town games. Now they are likely to travel to Ilford, to see their nephew Jon Stephenson play. Jim and John Stockman played for Southgate Olympic and Phil Stockman their elder brother played two games for EFC back in the 60's.

I understand that John is now a referee - having seen him play it is clearly "poacher turned gamekeeper." He would suggest he was "Hard but fair".

BTW Sundays all of the Stockmans would turn out at the Rolling Mill sports club in White Webbs Lane for Haringey Nalgo X1.

>>Southgate Olympic played at Broomfield Park

Southgate Olympic are in the AFA. They are / were not the Spartan League side.

The Spartan League team was Southgate - sometimes known as Southgate Athletic - their ground was just off the North Circular Road (On the London side of the road, just past the A10 junction).

They played on an enclosed park pitch and they also played in the FA Vase for a few seasons. As far as I know, they folded in the mid 80s.

>>Definitely was not a permanently enclosed ground though.

Correct - the clubhouse was at the side of the largish park amd there were two pitches.

Usually they used the pitch furthest away, and this was enclosed on a match by match basis - it was not a permanent enclosure.

I believe that it depended on the actual state of the two pitches as to which one they would use.

I go bird watching on the old RAF hornchurch base, part of which is now hornchurch country park and some of the old buildings are still there but unfortunatly the local chav population have decided to graffiti them and burn fires in them but i usually have the last laugh when i phone the old bill up and get the little sh1tes nicked!!!
